Dogs. Although they are known for being very affectionate and loving to their owners, each breed has its own distinct characteristic. For instance, the Golden Retriever is known for being very honest and loyal. Not only are they friendly, they’re also intelligent, loving, and a perfect pet for those who want a constant companion.
However, their good qualities aren’t limited to that; just like their name, they are very skilled when it comes to retrieving. They’re highly active and they love being engaged in various sports where their stamina and strength are tested.
Their ancestors are the Tweed water spaniels and the Newfoundland Irish setter. Wherein, way back in the 19th century, the main reason they were bred is to develop the perfect hunting dog large enough to intimidate other animals, but also have high endurance and capable of retrieving– even animals, such as birds. This has been a success because Golden Retrievers are excellent bird dogs that don’t only excel in land retrieval, but even in water as well.
Aside from being hunting dogs, Golden Retrievers have also been part of the British Nobility as they are the perfect companion. Unlike other dogs who want to show dominance, this breed focuses more on pleasing its owner. That’s why it does a wonderful job in search and rescue operation.
Personality and Temperament
They are the best dogs for families as they get along with kids really well. Likewise, they’re also loyal, obedient, playful, intelligent, and very well-mannered (as long as they don’t sense danger, or they can also get aggressive). Aside from that, they are also great watchdogs, but if you’re looking for a guard dog, Golden retrievers might not be the best candidates, because they are also friendly even with strangers.
We can say that Golden Retrievers just love humans in general, and for that reason, it’s quite difficult to train them as guard dogs, because instead of scaring the stranger away, it would lead up to a belly rub!
What they lack in this regard, they make up in other aspects. For instance, in obedience training, they are always on top of their classes, and champions of the sporting competition. No wonder why hunters love this dog– they are very reliable when it comes to finding birds because of their strong sense of smell and agility. They are also used by the law enforcement to detect narcotics and other drugs.
Since Golden Retrievers are a very active breed, one of the best ways to keep them happy and alert is by engaging them in regular exercise– both mental and physical. The good thing about them is that even busy individuals can meet their exercise needs because their usual activity requirements can simply be playing fetch and daily walks, but they would definitely appreciate it if you would also play outdoor games with them.
They enjoy almost any kind of outdoor activities as long as it’s with their owner, and they have the privilege of taking part in whatever physical activity, it may be– it can range from walking, running, biking, hiking, and even playing chase with the kids.
Another reason why they are perfect for families– even those with kids– is because they are naturally even-tempered. In fact, they can survive even in small spaces, and that’s why they are also perfect for apartment dogs. However, due to their size, it’s still important that you give them plenty of space where they can roam around because even though they wouldn’t complain about the lack of space, it’s definitely unfair for a large-breed dog to stay in a tight space for an extended period of time.
Golden retrievers aren’t that hard to please either. You can keep your pet happy by simply giving it 1.5 hours a day to exercise. Likewise, you also have to consider that even though they are very active, they wouldn’t exercise by themselves either! That means you have to do your job to play tug, run, or throw for fetch. Additionally, it’s not really advisable to let them run loose in a yard because there’s a huge possibility that they wouldn’t even ‘move’ at all. They’ll just give you the puppy eyes, which means they want to go back inside the apartment or building.
Are They Really Perfect as a Family Pet?
Truth be told, if you’re looking for a dog that would be perfect for your family, Golden Retrievers would probably be the safest choice. However, you have to keep in mind that since they are large-breed dogs, having enough space where they can roam around would be nice.
It’s ideal if there’s enough space for food, water, dog bed, and a play area. Likewise, they also want to be part of the family in a sense that they would constantly ask you for belly rubs. That means you should be willing and ready to have a buddy following you around– wherever you go, and would rather stay at your side most of the time. That also means you’ll probably catch them sleeping under your feet or beside you. Although this might work in a small space, this can be uncomfortable.
Known Health Issues
Based on research, it has been revealed that Golden Retrievers are very susceptible to cancer– 1 of every 2 Golden Retrievers develop cancer, and Hemangiosarcoma is the most common type of cancer they suffer from. Lymphosarcoma, mastocytoma, and osteosarcoma are the other forms of cancer they get diagnosed with.
Aside from cancer, they are also prone to getting skin diseases, and allergies.
Hip dysplasia, as well as elbow dysplasia, is also quite common to them– this is because of their size and structure. Some Golden Retrievers also suffer from epilepsy and eye diseases, especially when they are already getting old.
Although most dogs are loyal, especially if you take good care of them, some can still be independent and aloof. This is what makes the Golden Retriever special. Unlike other breeds that would rather be dominant, they enjoy being commanded by their owners. Best of all, they pay importance to family time, making them the perfect companion and pet for those with children or already starting a family.
